Sometimes biggest is best...

We learnt an interesting fact the other day; we are among only 2% of businesses in the UK that are 4th generation family businesses.  We're also proud to have been trading from our location since 1954 and we're even more proud of the fact that 2013 has been our busiest year to date.

Thanks to our loyal customers we are completing our best year of trading ever and have achieved it during one of our busiest years.  We thought we'd share some of the highlights with you.

The biggest ever buying season
January is always a busy period when we visit the manufacturers and furniture trade shows to buy stock and to see the latest trends from all over Europe.  This year was no different with much of it spent on the road ordering for the 2013 season.  This year, we bought more new stock than usual for one simple reason - we decided to completely refurbish our main showroom.

The biggest ever refurbishment
Much of the early part of the year was spent planning the refurbishment and making sure every detail was planned and scheduled - something we're used to doing for clients but it is somewhat different when you need to move an entire showroom of upholstery to make way for carpet fitters and decorators. Not to mention the dining tables, occasional tables, beds, sideboards, cabinets, lamps and accessories that also had to be temporarily moved.

The biggest ever weekend
The culmination of this was the special weekend we hosted in September to welcome our customers to the new showroom and we were delighted that 700+ people managed to visit us during the three days.

The biggest ever choice
But, it wasn't just the main showroom that got a complete make over; we also opened our new Fama showroom to showcase this extraordinary range from Spain - something that has proven to be very popular with many of you.

So, we now have a dedicated showroom for what we think is the finest furniture from Spain next door to our dedicated John Sankey showroom offering what we believe is the best range from a UK manufacturer.

The biggest variety of design projects
Our interior designers have also been extremely busy with more major residential design projects than ever before and not all of them here in Scotland.  Successful projects from properties in Southern Ireland and BarcelonaSpain have meant they've been travelling around a great deal.

The biggest award
You may recall we brought you news about Dame Helen Mirren's play in London, The Audience. John Dick & son provided two Kittoch chairs which were the centrepiece of the stage set and we were delighted to hear that Dame Helen Mirren went on to win an Olivier Award for her portrayal of HRH The Queen.

The biggest fuel bill
It seems every part of the business has had its biggest year including our delivery and installation team who have covered more miles and delivered more orders in 2013 than ever before.  All of them will surely welcome a well earned break for a short time over the Christmas period.

The biggest party
We also had a very special occasion on Friday 20th December, John Dick celebrated his 80th birthday; he most probably took a moment to reflect on 60+ years in the furniture business, he is extremely heartened to see how successful the business has been in 2013.  We wish him a very happy birthday and look forward to celebrating 60 years at the current location during 2014.

Our final thanks have to go to all of you who have supported us over the years and in particular during 2013.  Recent trading conditions have been tough for all retailers so we are especially grateful for the loyalty and support you have shown our family business.

We wish each and every one of you a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, we're certainly look forward to doing it all again in 2014.

Sankey Please Stop Here!

It may be a slightly alternative Christmas wish but here at John Dick and Son we like to keep our promises and are looking forward to our last pre-Christmas orders coming in.

Our very own sleigh will be packed up with special deliveries to be made over the next week to give our customers the new look they’ve been waiting for this Christmas! It’s a bustling time of year for us getting organised with deliveries and making sure all our customers are happy!

We were especially excited to receive the delivery from our stunning upholstery supplier John Sankey, as not only did they have a truck load of client’s orders but also some striking new models for display. Two new sofa models now sit proudly in our John Sankey Showroom; the Elgar, which makes an impact with its timeless and elegant frame and the Piccadilly which is oozing with contemporary lines and cut outs and finished gracefully with a fine wooden plinth.

And, why not add a bit of a twist with a funky occasional chair in a contrasting fabric, perfect for this are our new display models Wooster and Pepe. You can really make a statement with models such as these by adding contrast leather panels as we have demonstrated on our quirky Wooster chair. Go for a tailored look as we have or add a real bit of pizzazz with one of the many bold fabrics that Sankey have on offer.

We look forward to everyone seeing the new models when they next visit us in the showroom, whether that be before Christmas or in the New Year!

It has been a prosperous year for us here at John Dick and Son and we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year!

7 tips to transform your home without breaking the bank!

Christmas is fast approaching and it's that time of year when you're possibly going to be entertaining more than ever and, like most people, you're probably thinking your home could do with some changes.  The good news is, you don't need to spend a fortune to brighten up your home and perhaps change the look and feel of your rooms in time for the festive season.  In this blog post we provide some simple ideas that can change the focus of your room without making wholesale changes.

Get cool with cushions...
Cushions are a fantastic accessory, forget the added comfort they offer - they can transform the look of your room and the more adventurous you get, the greater the impact! You can even change them to suit the seasons; oranges and browns in tweed for the Autumn, bright flowery patterns in satin in the Summer or even red and green velvet for Christmas.

If you want to have something even more versatile why not look at double-sided cushions, perhaps tweed on on side and leather on the reverse.  The possibilities are endless and it really is a fairly cheap way to change the look and feel of your room.

Sit back and enjoy Ottomans and Stools...
If you're having the whole family round for Christmas you will probably need some extra seating and ottomans and stools can provide extra occasional seating but they can also add colour and introduce other textures to your room.  As with cushions, ottomans are extremely flexible and you can easily change the cover and the material to suit the seasons or indeed your mood.

Switch the mood with Lamps...
Lighting is perhaps one of the easiest ways to change the look, feel and mood of a room so why not add a couple of lamps or even a standard lamp to change your room.  And remember, it's not just the illumination that will create the mood, the shades provide yet another opportunity to introduce colour and texture.

If you select large bold lamps they can become a real feature in a room without breaking the bank and again you have the flexibility to change the shade colour whenever you wish.

Reflect on mirrors...
Mirrors are functional but they can also be wall art; creating a striking impact with a bold mirror is a great way to change the focus of your room and in many cases it can make rooms look larger.  In fact, introducing bold wall art in general is a great way to set the mood in a room and it doesn't have to be a picture, it could be an overside clock for example.

Feature a wall...
You may not be planning to completely redecorate however you could consider changing the wall covering of one wall. There are some amazing wall coverings available that can really make a statement and transform your room.

We recently published a blog post entitled "The Williamson WOW factor" where we featured some stunning wall coverings and fabrics from Osborne & Little, this is just an example of what can be achieved, we have hundreds of wall coverings to choose from and you're sure to find something that can WOW your visitors this Christmas.

Tie it back in style...
Replacing curtains could be outwith your budget however replacing tie backs can transform the curtains you already have. Choose something that contrasting either in colour or texture - or both.  If you want something glitzy for the festive season, take a look at some of the amazing 'metallic' style fabrics that were featured in a previous blog entitled "Gold, Silver and Bronze...be inspired", perhaps it can give you some inspiration that will brighten up your curtains?

Be eclectic with your furniture...
It might not be the right time for you to replace all of the furniture but have you considered the eclectic approach?  Consider adding a chair that compliments your existing furniture but also becomes a feature of the room.  Perhaps the most obvious is our Kittoch Chair which is available in any Tartan but we have lots of options in many styles that can be covered in whatever fabric you wish.  A popular choice at the moment is the intimate 'snuggler', ideal for cuddling up in front of the Christmas telly!

If you do consider this option and wish to get something specially made you should decide soon if you want it for the Christmas period.  However, with over 80 sofas and chairs in our showroom you may see something in stock that suits your taste.

Sally's simple tips...
Take a look at the video below, it was made a couple of years ago but Sally's advice is as relevant today as it was then - a good demonstration that this sound advice is genuinely timeless.  Sally explains some of the ways you can completely transform the look and feel of your room without incurring massive expense.

We're here to help...
We hope this post has given you some food for thought and perhaps some inspiration, we'd love to see you in the showroom where you can see lots of examples of the things discussed in the post and if you need some help you with your choices we will be happy to assist.

Please also take the opportunity to share this post with your online community using the share buttons below, there's a good chance they will find it interesting too.

Dames, Queens and elaborate props... all part of the theatre at John Dick and Son #JDSCentreStage

It's coming to that time of year again - THE PANTO SEASON with all it's Dames, Queens and elaborate props is almost upon us.  Here at John Dick & Son we can provide our own little bit of theatre that includes all of the above.

You may recall earlier this year we brought you news about our involvement with 'The Audience', the hit London play starring Dame Helen Mirren. In the play she played HRH The Queen and it centred around the audiences with various Prime Ministers over the years. Needless to say, the production went on to be a multi-award winning success and congratulations to Helen for winning the prestigious Olivier Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II.

The stage set comprised of two chairs, and the ones used in the Balmoral scene were our very own Kittoch Chairs.

We are delighted to say, the chairs have now returned to the showroom where you can see them for yourself.

We have one of the beautiful chairs on display in our reception and you're welcome to come and sit in it and imagine for a minute you're a Dame - or a Queen!  In fact, why not get a snap shot of you in the chair and upload it to your Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram account using the hashtag #JDSCentreStage.  You can then search the #JDSCentreStage hashtag on any of these platforms to see everyone else who has tried the chair, and we may even lay on a couple of prizes for the most theatrical poses!

The handmade Kittoch Chair is available in any tartan; in fact, it's available in any fabric you wish but we think it particularly suits tartan! Visit The Kittoch Chair Web Site

If you would like to experience the comfort and quality of the Kittoch Chair you can do so at the John Dick & Son showroom, we can also show you the endless selction of tartans to choose from.

We were also delighted to have this advert in the programme featuring the Kittoch Chair.

The Williamson WOW factor

We were very excited by the arrival of the latest Osborne & Little collection into our design studio and couldn’t wait to share it with you all.

If the “Wow Factor” is what you crave then look no further! The stunning new collection “Eden” is by well known designer Matthew Williamson who is renowned for his signature aesthetic; a master of print, embellishment, attention to detail and a kaleidoscope of colour. Having celebrated 15 years in fashion last year Williamson’s love of colour, pattern and texture has now been successfully fused with Osborne & Little’s savoir faire in furnishings to give stunning results.

Within the two pattern books lie enviable fabrics and wallpapers in unique designs and breathtaking colours!

The Pegasus fabric depicts a majestic winged horse in a scrolling silk and linen mix damask with a bold edge in a contrasting flash of colour. Empress displays an ornate knot motif brought to life in an elaborate embroidery with velvet. Cheetah and Ocelot provide sumptuous, textured co-ordinates reminiscent of sleek feline coats.

Make art of your walls with show stopping wall coverings such as peacock and sunbird and if you’re feeling wild, maybe a touch of Tyger Tyger wouldn’t go a miss! Peacock displays Williamson’s signature motif which is given an exotic edge with the use of tiny beads, in stark contrast Tyger Tyger features a magnificent stalking tiger in holographic foil and jewel tones.

So why not treat your home to a touch of decadence using the striking fabrics and wallpapers or if you would rather a slightly more subtle touch of glamour why not add some ready made cushions from the impressive collection available along side Eden. A perfect way to make a bold statement without shouting about it!
  • Fabrics available from £65.00 Per Metre.
  • Wallpaper available from £52.00 Per Roll.
  • Cushions available from £90.00 Each.

We need to make space, perhaps you can help...

You may have noticed recent social media posts have mentioned our recent buying trips and some of the great furniture that we managed to buy.  Many of these pieces were purchased based on the fantastic feedback we managed to get from our customers who managed along to our special weekend in September.

The new stock we bought is starting to arrive in the showroom on almost a daily basis and that's creating a problem for us - we need to create space!

In order to make room for all of the great new stock we are having a clearance sale and we're launching it to our blog readers and Facebook fans first.  If you know anyone who is looking for a genuine bargain on high quality furniture please share this post with them, they really are good deals.

We have 2 and 3 seater sofas, corner sofas, leather sofas, chairs and snugglers all on display in the showroom and available on a first come first serve basis.  Here is a selection of some of the stock we have available.

Please use the share buttons on the top or bottom of this post to tell others in your online community about these bargains, there's a good chance you'll know someone that will appreciate them.

The Press reminds us its not all sofas and chairs...

We thought we'd share some recent press coverage with you here on the blog. Surprisingly, the coverage is not all about our sofas and chairs - with over 80 in stock it's understandable that we get lots of newspapers and magazines featuring our range.

The cuttings we're sharing here are about some of the other things we have on offer in the showroom.  Firstly, the Sunday Herald did an article at the time of the birth of the royal baby where they explored how the Royal nursery might look.  We were happy to contribute to the article and mention the beautiful range of nursery tales fabrics and wall coverings by Jane Churchill.  We have a full range of sample books for this range in the showroom.

The next piece of coverage we're featuring was in No.1 Magazine when one of our clocks was featured.  We have a fabulous selection of these trendy large scale clocks that are proving to be very popular with our customers.  We do tend to focus on the larger furniture pieces in most of our promotional material but it is worth bearing in mind we have a large selection of mirrors, lamps, wall art and ornaments - many of these make ideal wedding and house warming gifts.

Finally, it's almost impossible to escape the coverage we get for our chairs and sofas so we've picked one to feature here.  You will have seen details of our new Fama range in previous blog posts and it's nice to see the press taking an interest in it too.  The range has been extremely successful for us already with lots of orders for this fantastically well designed high quality furniture from Spain.

The Herald featured the Fama Moon Chair; as you can see, it is as beautiful as it is flexible, a real joy to look at and to relax in.  We have a special showroom dedicated to the Fama range and the best way to appreciate the quality and the comfort is to come in and try it out.  We'll even provide a coffee so that you can really relax and enjoy the experience.

You'll also notice The Herald featured an old favourite - The Kittoch Chair. Available in any tartan, it remains one of the most popular chairs that we stock and perhaps made a little more famous this year by Dame Helen Mirren! READ MORE

Our refurbished showroom is well and truly open but we're not resting on our laurels...

Two weeks ago we celebrated the reopening of our refurbishment of the showroom with a special weekend for our customers and we would like to thank everyone who came along to see what we've done.  Over 700 of you managed to pop in and see us and it was a pleasure to see each and every one of you.  We were especially pleased with the response to the changes and the wonderful complimentary comments we received about the range of furniture we have to offer.

However, at John Dick & Son we don't rest on our laurels so we've already been away on another shopping trip to buy new stock for the showroom.  The trip was perhaps made a little easier because we had the chance to speak so many of you about what you like and the type of furniture you're looking for.  We think we have selected pieces that will be a hit with our customers and we invite you to come in and see them for yourself.

The current trends are for strong, bold and contrasting colours in a mixture of fabrics.  Beautifully textured velvets are blended with patterned fabrics, tweed and leather used together are the perfect combination and bold stripes are complimented by cushions in strong contrasting colours.

We took some snap shots during the trip which will give you an idea of what to expect but the best way to appreciate the quality, detail, comfort and splendour of the furniture is to come in and see it for yourself.

Pre Christmas Deliveries
It's also worth mentioning that we're getting near the cut-off date for pre Christmas deliveries, we'll be announcing more about this in the next few days however, the general advice is to get your order in as soon as possible if you would like to have your new pieces for the festive season.
