What does your office say about your brand?


The marketing guys tell us branding is all-important and that your brand is much more than just your corporate identity; it's an expression of what you are and what you stand for. Branding is about your culture and how you connect with your customers or clients. Branding has never been more important, social media connects people in a whole new way; word-of-mouth and personal recommendation are key ingredients to successful social media marketing so it could be argued that branding is no longer about what you say you are, it's what your customers say you are.

In his book, Emotional Branding, Daryl Travis says, "A brand isn’t a brand to you until it develops an emotional connection with you.” Alina Wheeler also writes, “…brands speak to the mind and heart” in her book entitled Designing Brand Identity

How your brand is interpreted is influenced by many different factors; how you answer the phone or how you deal with problems will influence the perception of your brand. Your corporate social responsibility policy or the content you create and the people you engage with are all contributing factors in forming opinions and establishing reputations.

Equally, your business interior can influence what people think about your brand so, what does your interior say about your brand?


John Dick & Son has recently completed an interior design project for fatBuzz Ltd, a Glasgow based media agency. fatBuzz work in social media and they wanted the interior reflect the innovative and dynamic nature of the business. The main office is now bright and airy with lots of areas for team collaboration and client meetings. The floor of the office is Astroturf and visitors are invited to compete in their appropriately named "Finding the Net" golf challenge - scores are recorded on a "Top Gear" style leader board. Managing Director, Gordon White says, "We wanted the office to have a creative feel but more than anything we wanted it to be fun. We tell clients that social media should be fun, even when the message is serious."


The design brief for Gordon's own office was interesting; he wanted an informal style meeting area that could double up as a breakfast TV type set for recording client video content. John Dick & Son created a mood board using elements of colour taken from the bright pink and green fatBuzz identity. However, we needed to retain an element of neutrality so that the fatBuzz branding will not dominate the room when clients want to use the video recording services.


We think the result is stunning; comfortable swivel chairs - one bright green, the other bright pink form an immediate impression when you enter. A charcoal sofa complements these and tartan cushions in a "fatBuzz" style pink and green tartan add a nice soft touch. The white lacquer and timber finished coffee table and sideboard finish the room beautifully. All of this is set against some very unusual "Newsprint" wallpaper - "...emphasising the need to create great content to succeed in social media marketing" says Gordon White.

The final touches to the room are the inspirational pencil drawings of iconic people like Steve Jobs - founder of Apple Corp.

Gordon White says, "We are delighted with the result, Sally and her design team really did interpret what fatBuzz is all about and we have had many compliments since the offices were completed. It was the right decision to involve John Dick & Son - everything from the initial mood board to the delivery driver arriving at exactly the arranged time was a credit to the company, I would recommend them to anyone."

An advert from 25 years ago, but some things don't change...

We came across some old adverts the other day and we thought we'd share them with you.  The adverts are from 1987, yes that's 25 years ago.  

The first image was shot in our showroom and the second image was shot in our beautiful grounds.  We took the cabinet down in a Land Rover for this photo shoot - the weather in 1987 must have been better than we've had during 2012!

It's great to look back on old photographs and remember some of the great times we've experienced at John Dick & Son, we hope you enjoy looking at them.


We have also included a couple of the most recent adverts to let you see how things have changed with our advertising style however one thing remains the same, the quality of our furniture and the service we strive to provide each and every customer.  One more difference 25 years on is the selection of furniture, fabrics, wall-coverings and soft furnishings - we have over 80 sofas and chairs on display in our extensive showroom complex.
