It's been a busy time...many have testified to that!

Well folks, 2012 is almost at an end and what a busy year it's been at John Dick & Son, we thought we'd round off the year with a recap of some of the things that we've been up to this year.

We got off to a really busy start with the opening of the Sofa Barn in what was the original showroom when we first opened way back in 1954. We opened the Sofa Barn in response to demand for lower cost sofas; nowadays most households have more than one sofa but people don't want to spend same amount on furniture for TV rooms or conservatories as they do for their formal lounge. However, they still want quality and that's why we opened the Sofa Barn, all of the furniture available here is designed and manufactured with price in mind; by making the most of all the materials and minimising waste, we are able to bring you a superb range of sofas from as little as £599.
The new showroom has be extremely successful and we are delighted by the response we've had from customers old and new. Bruce Dick, Managing Director of John Dick & Son said, "The opening of the Sofa Barn means we can now offer our customers something for every room in the house; more and more people have two, three or even four sofas in their house. We can now provide everything they need whether it be for their formal lounge or their TV room or den."

We were also delighted to be involved once again with Castle Stuart Golf Club, home of the Scottish Open Championship. Working alongside G1 Architects, we fitted out the interiors for two luxury self catering lodges in the grounds and we were particularly pleased to get the following letter from Mark Parsinen, Managing Partner at Castle Stuart,

“Kingsbarns and now Castle Stuart Golf Links enjoy welcoming and comfortable clubhouses in no small part because of the exceptional guidance and service provided by Bruce and Sally Dick of John Dick & Son, the fine furniture and interior design firm in Glasgow. Our goal for the interior design at both Kingsbarns and Castle Stuart was to create an elegant yet understated, warm and comfortable clubhouse interior to enjoy oneself before and after golf. Their top-to-bottom counsel proved critical in achieving these goals. Our golfers owe a large part of their full and pleasurable golfing experience to the artful advice on colour, fabric, and furniture choices provided so thoughtfully by Bruce and Sally. Their professionalism and friendly manner spanning 13 years of working together have meant the world to me. I recommend them wholeheartedly and without reservation.”

In July we brought you our "Fifty Shades of Grey" blog post and competition, this proved to be very popular and we'll be bringing you more fun promotions and competitions in 2013.

In August Olympic fever hit the nation and what a great sporting summer it was too, we managed to get in on the act with our "Gold, Silver or Bronze...be inspired" blog post that looked at how metallics can be used to great effect in your interiors.

It's been a really busy year for our interior design department, we have already mentioned the work they did at Castle Stuart but it wasn't just this and many house interiors that kept them busy, we were delighted to be involved in some office interior work too. We wrote a blog post about one of these jobs back in September that looked at how we managed to integrate the fatBuzz branding into the interior of their offices - something that we increasingly asked to do. Here's what Gordon White, Mamaging Director of fatBuzz had to say about the end result, "We are delighted with the result, Sally and her design team really did interpret what fatBuzz is all about and we have had many compliments since the offices were completed. It was the right decision to involve John Dick & Son - everything from the initial mood board to the delivery driver arriving at exactly the arranged time was a credit to the company, I would recommend them to anyone."

If you missed it, you can read the full story here: What does your office say about your brand?

The interior design team were also delighted with the outcome of a project in Strathaven, this was a major extension to a family home and we were lucky enough to be involved with the client from the outset of the project. We were equally delighted with the response from the client when the work was complete, here's what Julie had to say about her new kitchen and living area, "I have recently completed an extension and kitchen conversion. The extension left me with a blank canvas which Sally has designed and filled far beyond my expectations. Every aspect of the room was fully discussed and all my likes and dislikes taken into account before we made the final decisions.

I would recommend John Dick and Son to anyone, regardless of whether you need led or have a definite idea for your design needs you will be in very capable hands. Nothing was left to chance; Sally visited my home on several occasions with sample books and tape measure in hand. Sizes checked and double checked, colours matched and re-matched. Sally was extremely patient and understanding when I was completely frazzled with the whole building process. My curtains, sofa, chairs, dining table, soft furnishings, wallpaper and lighting have all come from John Dick and Son. It was brilliant being able to work with Sally knowing that she had a great team behind her looking after all my needs."

All in all it's been an extremely busy year, we'd like to thank all of our clients and customers for taking the time to visit the showroom and for reading our blogs and engaging with us on Facebook, we value your feedback and your comments. We look forward to engaging with you in 2013 and we hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing time with your friends and family over the Christmas period.

From blank canvas to a work of art...

At John Dick & Son we love it when clients come to us with a blank canvas like the project we've just completed in Strathaven. As you will see from the pictures, there really was a lot of building work undertaken to create the space for Julie's new kitchen, dining and living area but it did provide a blank canvas for our design team.

In many ways, working with a completely new space is easier than accommodating existing room features however, it does present other challenges that have to be addressed.  A completely new space is often more difficult for the client to visualise in it's finished state, that's where good clear mood boards and design drawings really play their part.  We also have to judge such things as the natural light conditions at various times of day, it's all very interesting and important if we are to achieve the desired ambiance.

With the project in Strathaven we were very fortunate that the client had complete trust in our judgement and, she was open to considering our suggestions and recommendations.  It is important for us to form a close working relationship with our clients, we need to understand their likes and dislikes and their overall objectives.  Here's what Julie had to say about our service, "I have recently completed an extension and kitchen conversion. The extension left me with a blank canvas which Sally has designed and filled far beyond my expectations. Every aspect of the room was fully discussed and all my likes and dislikes taken into account before we made the final decisions."

The successful implementation of any design project depends on meticulous planning, checking and double checking; at John Dick & Son we leave nothing to chance and we're even more delighted when the client appreciates the effort we take to make sure everything turns our just as we planned it.   Here's what Julie had to say about our attention to detail, "I would recommend John Dick and Son to anyone, regardless of whether you need led or have a definite idea for your design needs you will be in very capable hands.

It was a pleasure to work on this project, we are as delighted with the final result as the client appears to be, we're sure you'll be impressed (and slightly envious) of the beautiful space that Julie and the design team at John Dick & Son have created.

If you have an interior design project, whether a new extension or an existing space, that you would like to discuss with the design team at John Dick & Son please email Sally at sally@johndickandson.co.uk or give us a call on 0141 644 1115, we will be happy to have a coffee and chat about how we can assist you.

Our designers have really messed up!

This was the scene in the showroom the other day, haven't our designers really made a mess?
This is not an unusual occurrence, the designers often use the showroom for design consultations.  This was the scene after an initial consultation with a new client last week and, as you can see, the design team are happy to leave no leaf unturned in the many sample books we have in order to make sure the client can consider all of the options.

At John Dick & Son we know your home and your new interior are important; we also know that you may not always know exactly what you want, that's why we're happy offer you our advice and to show as many samples as it takes to get it absolutely right for you.

Many clients also enjoy the benefit of being able to see and experience the quality and comfort of the furniture while they choose the exact material they wish to use - we even encourage them to get into their favourite position and try the sofas and chairs as they would in their own home.

If you would like to chat with our designers about your next interior project please email sally@johndisckandson.co.uk we will be happy to make a mess for your interior!

WIN a Sofa Bed worth £889

DOES WORKING FROM HOME AFFECT YOUR SOCIAL LIFE?

Nowadays, more and more people are working from home offices; if fact, the homeworker is now recognised as an important sector for  the economy.  We've seen various articles questioning if these workers miss out because they have less interaction both in the office and on the way to work - that's a discussion for another day.

In this blog post we want to explore whether working from home affects your personal and social life in any way.  The smoking ban, the rising cost in dining out and the state of the economy in general means more people are entertaining at home; having guests for dinner and perhaps inviting them to stay over.  But, what happens if the Guest Room is now your office?  Do you find you have less overnight guests than you used to?  Would you like to be able to offer a bed to your dinner guests but unable to do so because the spare bed had to make way for a desk?

Or, you may have a regular overnight guest like a son or daughter who return periodically from their university studies or, an ageing relative you provide respite care meaning you have to keep your Guest Room.  So, working from home is not an option even though the spare room is not in regular use.

Could a good quality sofa bed be an option?  You could convert that underutilised space into a place to work but still have the flexibility to offer a bed to the occasional overnight guest?  The quality of sofa beds nowadays is really very good and, when they're folded away they can make your home office look very welcoming for the business visitor.  We certainly see lots more people opting for this a solution to maximising the space in their homes and we offer an excellent range of sofa beds through our sister company - The Sofa Barn.

The Sofa Barn is located in it's own stand alone showroom within the John Dick & Son "Campus", you're welcome to drop in have a look at the large selection of contemporary furniture we have on show.  Likewise, why not speak to one of our design team about how you can convert your spare room to a business like office by day and an inviting guest room by night.

To promote our extensive range of furniture we are offering the chance to win this stunning Sofa Bed - all you have to do is like our Facebook Page and tell us which celebrity or business personality you would most like to have as a guest in your home and why.

The competition is open to everyone and the best answer received by Noon on Friday 16th November 2012 will selected by the management at John Dick & Son and the winner will receive the beautiful Sofa Bed pictured above. Delivery charges outside central Scotland will apply. The management’s decision will be final.

What does your office say about your brand?

The marketing guys tell us branding is all-important and that your brand is much more than just your corporate identity; it's an expression of what you are and what you stand for. Branding is about your culture and how you connect with your customers or clients. Branding has never been more important, social media connects people in a whole new way; word-of-mouth and personal recommendation are key ingredients to successful social media marketing so it could be argued that branding is no longer about what you say you are, it's what your customers say you are.

In his book, Emotional Branding, Daryl Travis says, "A brand isn’t a brand to you until it develops an emotional connection with you.” Alina Wheeler also writes, “…brands speak to the mind and heart” in her book entitled Designing Brand Identity

How your brand is interpreted is influenced by many different factors; how you answer the phone or how you deal with problems will influence the perception of your brand. Your corporate social responsibility policy or the content you create and the people you engage with are all contributing factors in forming opinions and establishing reputations.

Equally, your business interior can influence what people think about your brand so, what does your interior say about your brand?

John Dick & Son has recently completed an interior design project for fatBuzz Ltd, a Glasgow based media agency. fatBuzz work in social media and they wanted the interior reflect the innovative and dynamic nature of the business. The main office is now bright and airy with lots of areas for team collaboration and client meetings. The floor of the office is Astroturf and visitors are invited to compete in their appropriately named "Finding the Net" golf challenge - scores are recorded on a "Top Gear" style leader board. Managing Director, Gordon White says, "We wanted the office to have a creative feel but more than anything we wanted it to be fun. We tell clients that social media should be fun, even when the message is serious."

The design brief for Gordon's own office was interesting; he wanted an informal style meeting area that could double up as a breakfast TV type set for recording client video content. John Dick & Son created a mood board using elements of colour taken from the bright pink and green fatBuzz identity. However, we needed to retain an element of neutrality so that the fatBuzz branding will not dominate the room when clients want to use the video recording services.

We think the result is stunning; comfortable swivel chairs - one bright green, the other bright pink form an immediate impression when you enter. A charcoal sofa complements these and tartan cushions in a "fatBuzz" style pink and green tartan add a nice soft touch. The white lacquer and timber finished coffee table and sideboard finish the room beautifully. All of this is set against some very unusual "Newsprint" wallpaper - "...emphasising the need to create great content to succeed in social media marketing" says Gordon White.

The final touches to the room are the inspirational pencil drawings of iconic people like Steve Jobs - founder of Apple Corp.

Gordon White says, "We are delighted with the result, Sally and her design team really did interpret what fatBuzz is all about and we have had many compliments since the offices were completed. It was the right decision to involve John Dick & Son - everything from the initial mood board to the delivery driver arriving at exactly the arranged time was a credit to the company, I would recommend them to anyone."

An advert from 25 years ago, but some things don't change...

We came across some old adverts the other day and we thought we'd share them with you.  The adverts are from 1987, yes that's 25 years ago.

The first image was shot in our showroom and the second image was shot in our beautiful grounds.  We took the cabinet down in a Land Rover for this photo shoot - the weather in 1987 must have been better than we've had during 2012!

It's great to look back on old photographs and remember some of the great times we've experienced at John Dick & Son, we hope you enjoy looking at them.

We have also included a couple of the most recent adverts to let you see how things have changed with our advertising style however one thing remains the same, the quality of our furniture and the service we strive to provide each and every customer.  One more difference 25 years on is the selection of furniture, fabrics, wall-coverings and soft furnishings - we have over 80 sofas and chairs on display in our extensive showroom complex.

Furniture trends autumn 2012 - The future is eclectic

Having just returned from an interesting buying trip we are very excited about the furniture on order and can’t wait for it to arrive!

We found massive changes in style, particularly with the many different and unusual sofa ranges showcasing. As homes have become more open and in many cases multi purpose, styles and shapes have evolved to suit.

Most noticeable is the size, some are huge, from sofas to corner sofas, it now seems that the corner is starting to fill in and the sofas are like huge “beds” that all the family can lie on! On the other end of the scale some are very neat and ideal for a kitchen, conservatory or the spare room.

We loved to see colour making a big come back too! Duck egg blue, putty greys, and soft yellows in soft linen and chenille as well as cosy autumn hues, tweedy browns soft reds and greens with antique brown leather trims. Colours such as these also made a big impact on some of the gorgeous patterned upholstery fabrics that were used to transform many pieces, giving them a whole new look!

There was also no shortage of glamour with metallic fabrics, shiny silvers, purples and pinks with luxurious tumbled velvets, strong prints and shimmering damasks.

With an abundance of cabinet furniture to choose from to compliment the great range of upholstery the styles and possibilities are endless. From fine regency to rustic industrial styles and everything in between!

The buzz word from our trip is “eclectic”. When choosing furniture these days the rules are that there are no rules!!!
