We appreciate the mention in The Herald's Stylish Living magazine

Our thanks to Heather MacLeod for the mention she gave us in The Herald's Stylish Living magazine today (Wednesday 17th August).

I response to this question from a reader, "I want to buy a classic sofa for my living room.  Can you recommend a particular make or model?", Heather gave the following answer:

"While appearance and comfort are critical, so is the quality of build.  A sofa with a sprung base will stand the test of time.  The team at John Dick & Son recommend feeling a sofa to ensure it is solid, that the fabric is taut on the frame and that the cushions have a good weight.  A cushion with added interior foam is firmer and keeps its shape, while feather filling gives a soft seat, but requires regular plumping to retain its shape."

The sofa featured in Stylish Living is the Bloomberry
Heather's answer is much appreciated but it also highlights one of the problems faced by many of our customers who have considered the option of buying online - they can't actually touch or try the sofa.

Buying a new suite for your home is a fairly major decision and it's one you want to get right so, being able to see it and sit on it is essential.  We go even further; we regularly invite customers to throw off their shoes and get into their favourite 'lounging' position so they can experience exactly what it's like.

Another key factor when buying from our showroom as opposed to online is colour correctness; we have had customers who have bought online only to discover their purchase is not the correct colour or tone.  Here at John Dick & Son it's never a problem, we have a fully stocked sample room so you can choose the exact colour you want - you can even match it with curtain fabric and wall coverings from our extensive range of sample books.

Finally, you may wish to read what a satisfied customer said about our delivery service and compare that with buying online - we take all of the stress out of the delivery process.  Read the blog post here.

We don't want to be your interior designers...

Of course the heading is not strictly true - we would love to be your interior designers but, if you have your own design ideas that's fine with us too, we're happy to pull them together, organise samples and provide your furniture.

We've found this particular policy very beneficial in recent times, particularly when working with architectural practices on commercial projects.  The high cost of maintaining an up-to-date library of sample books and producing mood boards has led many architects (and even interiors designers) to evaluate that particular service and many have had to let it go completely.  John Dick & Son are happy to fill that void and work with architects and designers so they can continue to offer these services to their clients.

Furthermore, many interior designers and architects come to John Dick & Son to source furniture because we have long standing relationships with many of the major furniture manufacturers.  Our relationships have been built up over a 50+ year history in the market and we enjoy a high level of trust within the industry.  We can provide most things, whether it's a traditional or contemporary design or, a full building to a single room we'll be happy to chat through the options.

So, if you are involved in interior design, either as an architect or an interior designer, please give as a call or arrange to meet us for a coffee and a chat to find out how we can work together and improve the service that you can offer your clients.

The Sunday Times agrees with our trend predictions...

It was nice to see that yesterday's Sunday Times 'Home' supplement was agreeing with our predictions for furniture and interior design trends as outlined in our blog post at the start of 2011.

Even the furniture and overall "look" on the cover of the Home section was reminiscent of the picture we used in our post.

Understated Elegance...

Picture this……….your dream lounge; classic and simplistic in design but with that little hint of glamour!!

Here at John Dick & Son we have the confidence, knowledge and products to help you achieve this look, which is sure to impress your guests at first glance.

Make a statement with our new sofa range from Derwent, which is guaranteed to give a grand and luxurious feel. The Burlington and Chatsworth designs have been launched with a wonderful new range of fabrics called “Glamorous Classics”. The range includes stripes, textures and damasks in contemporary tones which have an opulent metallic sheen, thus creating spectacular impact.

Compliment your upholstery with some stunning occasional pieces to complete this elegant look. The sofas are grand in design and therefore any tables, consoles or sideboards should be well proportioned to sit along side.

Carry on the timeless, elegant feel when introducing the occasional pieces. Furniture with an art deco feel for example would sit well in the room; curved form, bold lines and geometric motifs making a simple and effective statement. Dark finishes on these pieces make a real statement against the muted tones of the upholstery.

Our range of exquisite furniture by “Selva”, one of our Italian suppliers, would be a worthy companion to the Burlington & Chatsworth sofas. Much time, thought and effort is put into the designs of their vast collections, creating a beautiful and individual range of furniture in many styles and finishes.

We also have an extensive library of fabrics & wallpapers which our interior designers would be happy to specify alongside your furniture to create that overall look of timeless beauty!!

Knockinaam Lodge – Truly a home away from home

Our recent blog posts have tended to focus on domestic interiors and interior design for your home so we thought we would change the emphasis in this post and feature a design project and a client with which we have had the privilege to work - Knockinaam Lodge.

Knockinaam Lodge is the only luxury boutique hotel in Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland. Owners David & Sian Ibbotson warmly welcome guests with personalised service, stunning individual room and suite accommodations, and a delightful intimate and romantic atmosphere.

Few small country house hotels in Dumfries and Galloway, indeed anywhere in Scotland, can match the glittering array of awards possessed by Knockinaam – 3 AA red stars, 3 AA food rosettes – and 1 Michelin star (one of only 11 Michelin starred hotels in Scotland)

John Dick & Son has been working with David and Sian for the past 9 years to constantly refresh and upgrade the rooms at Knockinaam Lodge to help keep it at the top end of the luxury hotel market. We are fortunate enough to have worked on a number of rooms so far and we appreciate the the freedom and trust they have shown in us. Likewise, we appreciate the opportunity to work with a client who understands the need to provide a truly "home away from home" setting for guests, their attention to detail and desire to provide the very best quality has been rewarded in the many awards and accolades showered on the hotel.

David and Sian understand that investment in the interiors is an essential part of the Knockinhaam brand, here's they said about his ongoing investment in the hotel accommodation;

"Many of our guests are now old friends, they enjoy seeing the changes and investment we are making and often make comment on the progress of the hotel. The quality of furnishings and value for money that we receive from John Dick & Son make them our first call when planning the next project."

The work at Knockinhaam has been done over a period of time working to a carefully planned schedule to ensure minimum downtime for rooms and, minimum disruption for other guests. Everything is planned in detail before we arrive on site and the installation of each room is complete quickly and with the minimum possible inconvenience to the business and the hotel guests. Here's what they had to say about the service provided by the John Dick & Son team:

"Working with Sally and Bruce make what can be a stressful process enjoyable. Their enthusiasm and knowledge help us create our vision of Knockinaam Lodge. Their professionalism in keeping to budgets without compromising on quality and finish have made them a delight to work with."

We have included some pictures of various rooms but, if you really want to experience the attention to detail you have to visit the hotel - only then can you truly appreciate how much importance David, Sian his team place on quality. And, you will also have the chance to sample the fine dining offered by their head chef and his team!

If you would like to book a stay at Knockinaam Lodge please click the link here or call the hotel on 01776 810471, they will be delighted to hear from you.
