It really is an exciting time at John Dick & Son; last week we announced the arrival of the fabulous fama furniture from Spain and we're delighted with the reaction to the whole range, this week we're bringing you the Greta range.

We were impressed when we came across this range during the winter buying trips but seeing it in the showroom really gives us the opportunity to appreciate the design and functionality of every piece, not to mention the exceptional build quality.

This oak furniture is beautifully designed for modern-day living - bright, simple and highly functional. Coffee tables that convert to work areas with storage space below and, display cabinets with internal downlighters are just some of the many features that have caught our eye.  The dining tables are extendable meaning they can be folded down to save space when not in use, and the compartmentalised drawers in the cabinets slide effortlessly.

The simplicity of the design and absence of knobs or handles achieve a completely unclutterd look - this furniture will look good in any style of home.

An arrival from Spain has us all excited...

At John Dick & Son we are proud of all the ranges we offer; our expertise in choosing good quality furniture is based on almost 70 years experience and four generations running our family business.  However, every now and again we find something truly special, something that excites us, even after all these years. Spring cleaning, de-cluttering, re-decorating... a time to re-discover your home

It would appear spring has arrived, the warmer weather this week is very welcome and hopefully we can look forward to more of the same in the coming weeks.  With the arrival of spring comes spring-cleaning, a tradition that hasn't escaped John Dick & Son and we've been very busy on that front.

What starts out as spring cleaning or de-cluttering often leads to redecoration; the whole exercise of clearing out and giving your rooms an extra special clean often leads to a complete redecoration or makeover.  It's no different for us, but we have got to move over 80 sofas and chairs to make way for work to commence; literally hundreds of pieces of furniture have to be manoeuvred to make way for the tradesmen to work there magic and transform the showrooms.

We will be bringing you more news about the showroom refurbishment very soon but for now we thought we would share some pictures of the new pieces that have arrived in the showroom.  Our buying trip in the winter was very productive and we're delighted with the response to the new ranges that are already on show, with many more still to arrive.

Trends for 2013...We've been on a buying trip

It's been an amazing start to the year at John Dick & Son and it's hard to believe spring is almost upon us - even if the current weather doesn't suggest it!  The winter months are exciting for us because we get to see all of the new furniture and the latest trends at the various furniture exhibitions we attend. We've just been on our buying trips and we really are particularly excited with the selection on offer and the pieces we've bought for the showroom.

Many of the new pieces have already started to arrive in the showroom and we'll keep you up to date with all the latest arrivals on our Facebook page but, we thought we'd share some of the 2013 trends with you on the blog, we would also love to hear what you think about them.

Looking through the furniture shows there are some obvious trends - painted finishes for open plan living (particularly in the kitchen/living areas) is a clear favourite for 2013 and we've already got some of the collection for you to see in the showroom.

We saw lots of multi-functional quirky and funky furniture and yes, we've ordered some for the showroom. Accent pieces are also very prevalent and many of these will shortly be on show in the showroom but, here's a sneak preview of some of the sofas that are starting to arrive.

There are some other trends to look out for like high gloss finishes, chrome and metallics and, tailored woods. Leather and fabric combinations are also strong this year; we've been delighted with the response to this type of design so, we've ordered more for this season, here's an example of what to expect.

We also liked the strong Scandinavian influence this year like this beautiful Horizon sofa and oak dining range.

We hope there's something here that you like however, we would stress the only way to really appreciate the quality and scale of these beautiful pieces is to come in and have a look around the showroom. We believe there's something for everyone in this year's range and we hope you can come in, enjoy a coffee and, see some of the wonderful new furniture we have to offer.

The chair fit for a Queen...or a Dame

We've been watching the London theatre reviews very closely over the past few days.  Why?  Because we have an unusual interest in one particular play - The Audience, a new play by Peter Morgan starring Dame Helen Mirren.

The play centres on HRH The Queen's audiences with the various Prime Ministers throughout her reign and takes place using two scenes; the first is in Buckingham Palace, the second in Balmoral.  The stage set comprises of two chairs and the ones used in the Balmoral scene are our very own Kittoch Chairs.  The producers of The Audience asked us to provide two tartan chairs for this very special play and we were delighted to oblige.  Those who have seen the play already are saying the chairs look truly magnificent forming the centrepiece for half of the play.

The play is already receiving great reviews and, as you would expect, Dame Helen Mirren steals the show with her performance as HRH The Queen.  Here's an extract from one review: "...seamlessly directed by Stephen Daldry in Bob Crowley’s elegant designed set with its smooth transitions and impeccably acted, not just by Mirren but by its whole company. Entertaining and enlightening, this is bound to be one of the most successful plays of the year – book now while you still can."

We were also delighted to have an advert in the programme featuring the Kittoch Chair, hopefully lots of the The Audience's audience will be attracted to the beauty and comfort that Dame Helen Mirren is enjoying on stage every night!

A big long bargain blog post...

We've just returned from a buying trip when we bought lots of fabulous pieces for the showroom for 2013.  We will be bringing you more news and some images of the new stock in a later blog post however, we need to create some space for the new arrivals.

As you may know, our Annual Sale is running at the moment and we have 15% off all orders for new furniture until the 4th February but, we also have a large selection of stock we need to sell to make way for the 2013 range so why not get along to the showroom sometime soon to see some of the great bargains.

In this blog post we have included some pictures of a small selection of the clearance stock, you'll see some amazing savings in this selection and even more if you come and browse the showrooms at John Dick & Son and the Sofa Barn. The Annual Sale finishes on the 4th December although the clearance sale will continue but, if you want to get a real bargain you should come in soon.
