So here it is - our Games post!

What a summer it's been, first the World Cup, then something a little closer to home...and the Ryder Cup still to come. So, we thought we'd bring you our own games post.

Perhaps all of this activity has motivated you to get out and do something energetic, however our Games post is more for the armchair fans out there. Looking around the showroom, we realised we have quite a number of sports related items. Some the competitive among you can use for actual play, others that might simply serve to remind you of the summer we've enjoyed here in Scotland.

Here's a selection we've snapped in the showroom. And, if your a genuine armchair fan, we can even help you with the right chair!

Get it right - nobody downsizes anymore!

Over the past 10 years we've got used to the introduction of new words and terminology.  The emergence of social media has provided us with weird and wonderful words like 'podcasting', 'tweeting' and 'retweeting'.  Some, like 'selfie', have even been added to the Oxford English dictionary.

But, it would appear it's not only the marketers and technology boffins that are getting in on the act; estate agents are also changing the terms we use.  We've no sooner got used to the word 'downsizing' when we're told it doesn't apply any longer; apparently we don't downsize any longer - we now rightsize!

In reality, it is probably a better 'catchall' word because it can apply to those upsizing or downsizing, so we're going to give it our seal of approval.

Rightsizing is a topic we've covered in previous blogs; we recently explored how to make better use of the spare rooms you have in your home.  And, some time back we demonstrated what can be achieved if you want to extend your home when we featured a rather beautiful extension to a client's home in Strathaven.

We thought we would share a simple tip with those who are rightsizing (down the way) and find themselves living in m a much smaller space that they have been used to.  Mirrors can help to create the feeling of more space.  A couple of well placed feature mirrors will not only create the illusion of more space, they will also help spread more light which also helps make the room feel more spacious.

We have a fantastic range of mirrors in the showroom, so it's worth popping in to see if we've got something that's the right size for you.  You can also make good use of it to look at your own selfie!

Lucky us...a new working environment every season!

We've had lots of new deliveries in the past few days which has transformed the showroom.  We love it when new stock arrives - it's like getting a completely new working environment every season!

It seems a long time since the cold, wet winter days when we were travelling to the trade shows and visiting our manufacturers to agree this year's range, but it's been worth the wait.  We love the new pieces and we hope you will too.

Here is a small selection of what's arrived but, as we usually advise, it's much better to come in and try them for size and comfort - you wont be disappointed.

Getting parallel with unparalleled comfort...

It's not unusual to find a piece of furniture that is designed for flexibility but rarely do we find this in a complete furniture range. Spanish manufacturer Fama is without doubt on of the best examples of manufacturer totally focussed on usability; their furniture not only looks great, but it incorporates functionality based on modern day living and the making the most of the space you have available.

Whether it's a coffee table that incorporates storage with a top that raises as it pulls towards you, or a sofa where each seat reclines to the precise position you desire, every piece they make has the particular mood and comfort of the user at the heart of its design.

We are used to seeing this level of detail in their furniture but it seems each new piece that arrives in the John Dick & Son showroom demonstrates a little more about their tradition for innovation and their quest to achieve total flexibility and comfort for their customers.

Two recent arrivals provide the perfect examples of what Fama are all about; the Nest chair and the Lotus sofa.

The Nest is a new concept of armchair and you can easily imagine it becoming the most coveted seat in the house; you could almost live in it like your own little nest. Big enough to share with the family, you can add useful attachments like reading lamps and swivel tables - it even comes with its own blanket stored behind the seat cushion! Take a look at the video below and you'll get feel for what it can do, but come into the showroom and try it out to really get a feel for what it can do for you.

As we stated at the start of this post, it's not just the Nest that is produced to this extraordinary high standard, the Lotus range offers similar flexibility in a variety of sofa configurations. Each seat on the sofa can be reclined to the precise position you require whether you want to sit upright or lie parallel. Even the headrests are full adjustable to provide the maximum comfort to each person using the sofa. But, it's the ease with which it adjusts that truly reveals the quality of this manufacturer - you really need to try it to appreciate just how good it is. We have recently taken delivery of the Nest and the Lotus range and we encourage you to come along to the showroom and try it for yourself, we're sure you'll agree they offer unparalleled quality, comfort and design.

Harris Tweed...sitting pretty!

We've recently been enjoying considerable success with our range of furniture upholstered in Harris Tweed, and when you see it you can appreciate why so many people are attracted to it and why it remains popular throughout the world.

Harris Tweed as we know it today came into production at the start of the twentieth century and gradually grew in popularity over the next 6 decades - in 1966 the hard working islanders were producing an amazing 7.6 million yards of material annually!

Like many popular products, cheaper mass produced copies started to appear on the market and Harris Tweed went through a challenging period, but like many truly high quality products it survived.  Not only did it survive, it is thriving today and fining new markets globally.

Top fashion designers have welcomed their lightweight range of materials with open arms, celebrities want the genuine article and designers are finding new applications for the fabrics almost daily.  It can be found on anything from hand-made shoes to iPad covers, so it's little wonder it's appeared as a suitable fabric for high quality furniture.

At John Dick & Son we believe in quality and during our 60 year history we have seen many cheaper competitors to our ranges appear on the market, but at the end of the day there's no replacement for quality.

There is a temptation during challenging economic conditions to reduce standards to compete, but like Harris Tweed, we're please to have made the decision to continue on our 60 year old journey of quality and genuine value for money.

One of the reasons for the success of Harris Tweed (and something that makes it perfect for furniture) is it's durability. It is hard wearing and will look as good as new long after cheaper products have worn out.  Investing in quality furniture is a sound decision and Harris Tweed's enduring popularity may be the perfect choice of fabric to ensure your choice passes the test of time for design and durability.

We have a selection of Harris Tweed furniture on display in the showroom and our designers are happy to chat through the options for using this fascinating Scottish product.
